Vineyard concerts: what to know

The big outdoor concerts are at wineries around Pokolbin, a short drive north-west of Cessnock. Roche Estate has a grassy amphitheatre among the vines, with the Red Hot Summer Tour on 31 October 2026 and LOOKOUT 2027 (+LIVE+, Stone Temple Pilots and 4 Non Blondes) on 20 March 2027. Bimbadgen hosts A Day on the Green; its 2026 show is Boyz II Men with Salt-N-Pepa and Bell Biv DeVoe on Saturday 5 December from 4pm.

  • Parking is limited and usually pre-booked. For the Bimbadgen show, A Day on the Green says a parking pass must be bought in advance for $20 if you want a space, and that wet weather can close on-site parking (with shuttle buses instead).
  • Coaches run from Newcastle, Maitland and Cessnock for the big shows; A Day on the Green lists Rover Coaches for Bimbadgen.
  • Plan the trip home. Country roads, no streetlights and a long day: book a bus, a driver or a bed nearby.

Concerts in theatres

Indoor concerts run all year. The Civic Theatre in Newcastle has orchestras (the Sydney Symphony plays Max Richter's Four Seasons on 26 November), touring bands (Men At Work, Kim Wilde, The Church with an orchestra) and singers. Cessnock's Vincent Street theatre leans to tribute nights and Australian rock, with Choirboys booked for August 2027. For tribute concerts, see our tribute shows guide.

Planning a vineyard concert day

Vineyard concerts in the Hunter are long days outdoors, usually from early afternoon into the night, with several acts and a headliner after dark. A little planning makes them much more enjoyable.

  1. Buy tickets from the official seller, and check the ticket type: general admission on the lawn, reserved seating or a premium package.
  2. Plan transport. Wineries are spread out and roads are dark at night. Book the event's coach or shuttle where offered, organise a designated driver, or stay nearby. Taxis and rideshares can be scarce after the show.
  3. Check the event rules. Most concerts set rules on low chairs, picnic rugs, umbrellas, food, alcohol, glass, cameras and re-entry. Read them before you pack.
  4. Dress for the weather. Summer days are hot and nights can cool quickly; bring a hat, sunscreen, water and a layer for later. Comfortable shoes help on grass and slopes.
  5. Arrive in good time. Gates open well before the first act; arriving early gets a better spot on the lawn and avoids long queues.
  6. Plan to leave. Expect queues for buses and cars at the end; agree a meeting point with your group.

Theatre concerts

Concerts in theatres, such as tribute nights at the Cessnock theatre or shows at Newcastle's Civic Theatre, run to set times with allocated seats, so arrive in time to find parking and your seat before the start. They suit people who prefer shorter evenings, seats with backs and no weather to worry about.

Accessible concerts

Many concert promoters and venues offer accessible viewing areas, companion tickets for people with a Companion Card, accessible toilets and parking. Contact the promoter or venue before buying to arrange what you need. See accessible shows in the Hunter Valley.

Staying overnight

Concert weekends fill Hunter Valley accommodation quickly. If you plan to stay, book as soon as the concert is announced, and check whether your accommodation runs transfers to the venue. Staying overnight also means no one has to drive home late.

Concerts for families

Some outdoor concerts welcome children with family tickets, while others are 18 and over because of licensed areas. Check the age rules before buying, bring ear protection for young children, and plan for the late finish.

What to bring to a vineyard concert

  • Your ticket and photo ID, because many concerts check ID at the bar.
  • A low chair or picnic rug, if allowed.
  • A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • A refillable water bottle, if allowed.
  • A warm layer for the evening.
  • Comfortable shoes.
  • A charged phone and a portable charger for coach bookings and meeting friends.
  • Cash or cards for food and drink, which is usually sold on site.

Check each event's list of banned items before packing; many ban glass, large umbrellas and outside alcohol.

Our short answer

Hunter Valley concerts run mostly from spring to autumn at vineyards such as Roche Estate and Bimbadgen, with theatre concerts year-round in Cessnock and Newcastle. Buy from official sellers, plan transport home, and check each event's rules.

The concert season

Vineyard concerts in the Hunter cluster in the warmer months, from late spring to autumn, when evenings are long and dry. Winter brings fewer outdoor shows and more theatre and club concerts. Announcements often come months ahead, with tickets on sale soon after, and the biggest shows can sell out quickly. Join the venues' and promoters' mailing lists to hear about presales, and check our season table above for what is already announced.

Weather and cancellations

Outdoor concerts usually go ahead in light rain, so pack a poncho rather than an umbrella, which is often banned because it blocks views. Severe storms, heat or fire danger can delay or cancel a show; promoters post updates on their websites and social pages, and refunds follow the ticket seller's terms. Check before you leave home.
