About Finucane & Smith
Internationally renowned for their arresting mix of provocation and entertainment, Finucane & Smith creates legendary Salons of Humanity – intimate theatrical spectacles, surreal indoor carnivals, dark drama, beyond-genre cabaret and provocative variety – hijacking myriad art forms, engaging unique and extraordinary artists, and pecking the eyes out of old-style entertainment genres to create indelible visions of humanity, freedom, power and desire.
Their ground-breaking game-changing Burlesque Hour (2004 -) stormed five continents with its unique mix of high-art and low-brow seduction and subversion, winning critical acclaim in 15 languages. It is now the world’s most awarded provocative variety, and in 2021, streamed a live/hybrid/digital season to World Pride in Copenhagen from the world’s most locked-down city. Caravan Burlesque (2012-2015) pulled off the longest Australian tour of variety since the Gold Rush. Their Australian gothic The Flood (2016) became the first Australian drama to be invited to eastern China’s largest and longest-standing theatre festival, The Shanghai International Theatre Festival, and is now a major Mandarin language drama directed by Finucane herself. And their most recent work The Rapture is “an era-defining work” of Art vs Extinction having toured eight countries.
With 15 awards across all genres of performance including The Patrick White Playwright Award, International Theatre Institute’s International Presentation of the Year CHAMACO Award for Cuba, the Climakaze Art & Climate Award, Finucane’s appointment as inaugural Creative Fellow of the region’s largest gallery NGV, and an inaugural recipient of Creative Victoria’s Creator’s Fund, Finucane & Smith are an Australian first, barnstorming unrealistic art (or Unrealism as they call it) to audiences worldwide.
